Fromm Dog Food Review

You might have heard about Fromm if you’ve been looking for a healthy alternative to your dog’s current food. They make a lot of claims when it comes to the quality of their ingredients, but do their products live up to the hype?

This article examines every aspect of Fromm from what the company stands for to what goes into their kibble. Here’s everything you need to know about Fromm dog food.

What Is Fromm Dog Food and How Does It Work?

Fromm has been developing canine-friendly food since 1904, making it a 104-year-old company at the time of this writing. They are family owned and are even credited with helping create the canine and feline distemper vaccine back in the 1930’s. During the 40’s, they found a way to cook meats and grains together and churn it into dry kibble.

Today, Fromm focuses on creating human-grade dog food with high-quality ingredients. That makes them a popular pet food manufacturer amongst those who opt to buy premium dry food for their dogs. They cook their foods in small batches to ensure both quality and adherence to their strict standards.

The company produces an extensive line of dry and wet food designed for different stages in an animal’s life. Some of their products are designed specifically for dogs, while others are meant for cats. With such an extensive history and popular brand, the only thing left to look at is the ingredients Fromm uses.

Fromm offers a variety of flavors including:

  • Beef Frittata Vegetable
  • Chicken A La Veg
  • Game Bird (contains duck, turkey, quail, and pheasant)
  • Hasen Duckenpfeffer (a duck and rabbit combination)
  • Pork and Applesauce
  • Pork and Peas
  • Whitefish and Potato
  • Salmon Tunalini
  • Salmon A La Veg
  • Surf and Turf (a salmon, duck, and chicken mix)
  • Lamb and Lentil

You can find their foods in five, fifteen, and thirty-pound bags formulated for all ages from puppy to senior. Their line also features specialty formulas for nursing puppies as well as a diet for larger breed canines. Additionally, they make formulas for dogs with allergies, low-calorie options for overweight dogs, and heart-healthy options for the highly-active.

What Makes Fromm Dog Food Unique?

Any brand of pet food is unique in its ingredients. Different companies produce patented formulas to distinguish themselves from one another, though many rely on similar ingredients since there are only so many considered healthy for canines.

Just like the labels on your food, more prominent ingredients are listed first with minor ingredients listed last. Looking at their most popular formula, Duck and Sweet Potato, here are the main ingredients the company incorporates as listed on their official website.

Duck, Duck Meal, Pearled Barley, Sweet Potatoes, Brown Rice, Oatmeal, White Rice, Dried Whole Egg, Millet, Dried Tomato Pomace, Safflower Oil, Cheese, Flaxseed, Carrots, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Apples, Green Beans, Chicken Cartlidge, Potassium Chloride, Cranberries, Blueberries, Salt, Monocalcium Phosphate, Calcium Sulfate, Chicory Root Extract, Alfalfa Sprouts, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Sodium Selenite, Folic Acid, Taurine, Parsley, Sorbic Acid (preservative), Vitamins, Minerals, Probiotics.

As you can see, this formula comes packed with healthy, nutritious ingredients for your pooch. However, it is highly recommended to research each ingredient before deciding if Fromm dog food, or any dog food, is right for your pet.

Duck and Duck Meal

Duck is the primary ingredient in this formula, which means that your pet is eating meat first and foremost. This is beneficial if you have a dog with allergies since duck is the only protein listed in the ingredients.

Duck meal might strike you as controversial if you focus on providing your pet with natural, healthy foods. While the vast majority of meal on the market is considered unsafe for human consumption, Fromm uses only clean and natural duck meat to produce their meal powder. That means no intestines, bones, or any of the other nasty stuff you can expect from other meal products.

Without any of the added gunk, Fromm’s duck meal provides your pet with an incredibly rich source of protein. This helps to make up for any protein lost during the process of cooking the whole duck meat.

Pearled Barley and Sweet Potatoes

Barley contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. The soluble variety keeps blood sugars stable while keeping intestinal bacteria healthy. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to the food, helping your dog to feel full for an extended period.

Sweet potatoes provide your pooch with beta-carotene and a gluten-free complex carb. This ingredient also makes for an excellent fiber source, which is the next essential ingredient in any healthy animal meal.

Brown Rice and Oatmeal

Together, these ingredients provide a rich source of B vitamins, dietary fibers, and complex carbs. Both are easy for your pet to digest. Plus, they provide puppies and senior dogs alike with the energy they need to play.

White Rice and Dried Whole Egg

White rice is often added to balance the next protein on the list with a carb, which happens to be a dried whole egg in this case. Eggs are entirely digestible and rich in protein, making them an excellent ingredient in any dog food.

Millet

This is both a gluten-free and hypoallergenic grain. It is harvested from different types of grasses, an often unthought of food in the canine diet, and is rich essential nutrients as well as B vitamins.

Dried Tomato Pomace

This is the most controversial ingredient on the list. Tomato pomace is the leftover or by-product of tomato juice, ketchup, and soup. Proponents claim it is rich in antioxidants and helps with digestive health, while critics argue that is nothing more than a sugary filler. We recommend that you read more about dried tomato pomace before making a buying decision.

Other Ingredients

The rest of the ingredients in Fromm dog food are only found in minimal quantity. So, we’ve listed the ones that are not organic preservatives here to make your read easier.

  • Flaxseed – Excellent source of plant protein
  • Listed fruits and vegetables – Provide antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals
  • Chicken cartilage – Contains glucosamine and chondroitin, which support joint health
  • Chicory root extract – Contains a prebiotic known as inulin that aids healthy intestinal bacteria
  • Taurine – An essential amino acid

Pricing

You can expect to pay around $50 for a 33-pound of Fromm dog food. Grain-free options, which come in 26-pound bags, average around $75 a bag. The prices only go up from there, with the most expensive we found being the Surf and Turf formula at $150 for a 52-pound bag.

That’s expensive for dog food, considering the average bag of kibble costs around 20-30 dollars. However, this isn’t your run of the mill dry dog food. Factoring in the natural list of ingredients, all of which are human grade, and the long list of vegetables, the price becomes more reasonable.

Is it worth the price? That all depends on whether or not you think your dog needs this type of kibble. We feel that the price is decent when compared to other natural, human-grade quality foods.

Looking at a list of similar brands, here’s how Fromm stacks up:

  • Organix – $42 for a 10-pound bag
  • Earthborn Holistic – $52 for 28 pounds
  • Open Farm – $80 for 24 pounds
  • PetKind – $92 for 25 pounds

As you can see, the price is competitive in its market niche. You can find slightly less expensive when stepping out of human-grade quality, but Fromm delivers a reasonably priced product in that dog food group.

Public Perception (Other Fromm Dog Food Reviews)

Public perception of Fromm dog food is overwhelmingly positive. Dogfoodadvisor.com and Dogfood.guru both highly recommend their products for their quality ingredients and use of only meat in their meal. Both give Fromm four out of five stars.

Their only complaints were that the bags of food could contain more protein for their higher price tag and that some customers do like pearled barley or dried tomato pomace as ingredients. Otherwise, they consider the brand a winner amongst competitors.

You can find numerous reviews on Amazon as well, the majority of which are very positive. Some customers noted that their dog would not eat the formula they purchased, but pets do have differing tastes. All in all, people who chose Fromm for their dogs were satisfied with the results.

How It Compares

Not every food option is suited to every dog’s needs. Fromm dog food is an excellent choice if you’re looking for something with natural, healthy ingredients. However, there are a few instances where a dog may be better off with another brand.

If your pet requires breed-specific nutrients or a specific diet for health issues, then Fromm might not be the best choice. Labrador retrievers, for instance, often need a diet that offers joint health through higher levels of glucosamine and chondroitin.

Geriatric or senior dogs that require a formula tailored to smaller sized pets are out of luck here, too. Fromm has a wide variety of foods available, but nothing for this specific need.

That being said, Fromm dog food is a superb performer amongst natural foods for animals. Its ingredient list contains numerous items that any canine can benefit from, focusing on protein as the primary ingredient. They take great care in producing human-grade kibble (not that you would eat it) and follow strict standards in their manufacturing process.

When compared to other major name brands like Blue Buffalo, Nature’s Recipes, or Purina, Fromm is lightyear’s ahead of the competition in both ingredients and nutritional value. Our comparison of other natural, organic foods was a little closer to call.

We stacked Fromm against Earthborn Holistic and Organix, who both create dry dog food as well. Looking into the nutrient content, Earthborn contained more protein and crude fiber on average. However, this difference was no more than 4% across the board.

Earthborn uses pea protein, canola oil, and the same tomato pomace that from uses, which are all considered controversial ingredients. Menadione sodium bisulfate complex was also found amongst Earthborn’s ingredients, which has been found toxic to the kidneys, lungs, and liver.

Organix also incorporates pea protein, but performs roughly the same in nutritional content when compared to Fromm. One point to note was that Organix’s protein content came primarily from plant sources, which may not be as easy for a dog to digest.

While all three of these products contain numerous organic and natural ingredients, they come with a variety of pros and cons. Fromm remains easier to digest and strays away from any known or proven harmful ingredients. For those two reasons, we feel that Fromm dog food is the better option amongst these top competitors.

What We Think

If you’re okay with pearled barley and dried tomato pomace, then this is an exceptional choice in food for your pet. Fromm dog food incorporates high-quality, human-grade ingredients that ensure a safe and healthy meal for your canine.

The company has a long-standing history in the industry, focuses on scientific research to further advance their formulas, and contribute heavily to vaccination efforts. This is a company that cares about animal welfare, and it shows in the food they create.

We think the only two drawbacks are the higher price tag and a few missing options for specific needs. If the company would address different health concerns and expand its breed sizes, then we would give it a near-perfect rating. Those two minor issues aside, owners looking to provide a quality meal for their dog can’t go wrong with Fromm.
