It’s almost summer which means vacations! This is the time you’ve been looking forward to all year, no work just sunshine and relaxing! The only downside to vacation is having to leave your precious pooch at home. Unless you’re able to find a hotel that allows you to bring your dog with you, most likely you are calling relatives and neighbors to come over and take care of your dog.

It’s not always easy to find someone to take care of your dog, and if they forget to feed your dog then your poor dog doesn’t get to eat. That is not fair at all! So what if you didn’t need to trust someone to feed your dog. In this article we will show you how you can create your own automatic pet feeder.

There are many different DIY’s to make an automatic dog feeder. Some are extremely high tech and if you have those sort of skills go for it! For those of us that aren’t extremely technological, here’s a simple way that isn’t going to break your bank! Buying an automatic pet feeder is also an option but those can be a bit pricey. Keep in mind that parts of this DIY might have to change depending on the amount of food your dog eats and how big your dog is.

What you’ll need:

  • Dog Bowl
  • Tube
  • 1 Gallon bottle
  • Tape/Hot Glue
  • Spray Paint/Decorations
  • Food
  • Wood
  • X-acto knife
  • velcro tape

STEP 1:

The first step is to tape or hot glue the piece of wood to the back of your bowl. You want to make sure that it is strong enough to support the tube that you will be putting with it. Let dry for 10 minutes.

Step 2:

While the glue is drying this is a good time to cut your tube. Most hardware stores sell pieces of tube for cheap. You’ll want to make sure that the tube is big enough that the food won’t get stuck in it and also small enough to fit inside the opening of the gallon bottle or container that will be holding the food. You will then hot glue this to the wood piece that you have just attached to the bowl. Make sure that the opening of the tube is in the bowl about 1 inch from the bottom of the bowl.

Step 3:

Spray paint! This is not a required step but it helps to give it a more sleek look. You can customize it any way you want with decorations or even your dogs name. If not you can just paint it one full color.

Step 4:

You will then want to cut 3 sides of a square out of the bottom of your jug  (This is where you might want to take into consideration sizing. If the food your dog is eating is relatively small, a one gallon jug should be fine! If not you might want to use a bigger container.) using some sort of knife. This will be the opening where you will put the food in, so make sure that it is big enough to fit the food in. Then using a strip of velcro tape you can use that the seal the top.

Step 5:

Now comes the tricky part, I found it easiest to flip the bowl and tube upside down in order to make attaching easier. With tape you are going to want to attach the opening of the bottle to the tube.

Step 6:

The next step is to fill your gallon bottle with food, it will begin to fill up the bottom and then it will stop once it is full. Voila you now have an automatic dog feeder!

This can also work for other animals you may own such as cats. It is not limited to only dogs!
